Tree of Life – Boiko Region

Multicoloured flowers are typical in the Bioko region of Western Ukraine. The style reflects an influence from the proximity to Poland and Slovakia. Blues and reds are dominant colours. Like other Ukrainian regional styles, symbolic bird motifs are also incorporated into the designs. In Boiko embroidery, birds often symbolize the souls of ancestors, family life, and the awakening of nature.  Birds are usually depicted in pairs to signify couples and mutual love. The colour blue emphasizes peace, healing, spiritual calm, and protection, tranquillity and harmony within the household.
