Tree of Life – Kalyna

The Tree of Life is most often symmetrical, with a central stem balanced by motifs on either side. But it can also appear as a frieze or border.

Kalyna (cranberries) often appear in the linear form on rushnyky (honorary towels) displayed at a funeral. They represent the bridge of life travelled, from birth to death.

Kalyna is also a powerful national symbol representing beauty, love, motherhood, the homeland, family roots, and national resilience.  Its red berries symbolize blood, sacrifice, and the enduring spirit of the Ukrainian people through hardship.
