Tree of Life – Kosiv
Watercolour By Larisa Sembaliuk Cheladyn
In the city of Kosiv, Ivano-Frankivsk oblast, Ukraine, traditional pottery is painted in three colours – yellow, brown, and green. The colours are associated with the sun, the mountains, and the fertile land, and reflect the Hutsul beliefs and their connection to their environment.
The Tree of Life, with peacocks, is a popular motif on ceramic vases and wall tiles. The peacock is considered to be a sacred bird. It symbolizes beauty, pride, prosperity, and good fortune. It is identified by its long, dragging tail feathers and a crop of feathers on top of the head.
