In Ukraine, poppies were traditionally embroidered on the clothes of young, unmarried girls. They symbolize youth, beauty, fertility, and family continuity. In modern folk art, the poppy is a cherished symbol of national identity, hope, and an indestructible memory of the people.

With the global popularity of the poem “In Flanders Fields,” written during the First World War by Canadian physician Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, the poppy has become even more widely recognized as a symbol of remembrance for fallen soldiers.
