This exhibit was inspired by a series of watercolour studies I created in preparation for the commissioned piece “O Holy Light”. While working on the piece I became fascinated by light and how it can be interpreted on paper.
I was also intrigued by the symbolism attributed to the burning candle – enlightenment, awareness and the search for truth. The candle is considered to be a visible reminder of our triumph over darkness – when you light a candle it can be a gesture of defiance. A single candle cannot fight the darkness alone, but when many are lit together the darkness is removed.

I drew additional inspiration from the definition of il·lu·mi·na·tion n. 1 a. The act of illuminating. b. The state of being illuminated. 2. A source of light. 3. Decorative lighting. 4. Spiritual or intellectual enlightenment. 5. Clarification; elucidation. 6. The art or act of decorating a text, page, or initial letter with gold or silver ink, ornamental designs, miniatures, or lettering.

When thinking in these terms the ideas and possibilities for paintings are endless. I suspect that this is only the beginning of a new passion.
