The Vine of Life
Psalm 80:8 – “You brought a vine out of Egypt; You drove out the nations and planted it.”
John 15:1 – “I am the True Vine and My Father is the Vinedresser.”
The grape vine motif often is used as ornamentation in religious artifacts and in architectural detail (e.g., iconostasis). The grape is mentioned throughout the scriptures, from the days of Noah to the time of Jesus. “The fruitful vine” and “the vine brought out of Egypt” were symbolic of the Jewish people; Jesus described Himself as that “true vine” of which his followers were the branches.
