Whether it’s traditional clothing of the 1800s or costumes and T-shirts worn at yearly festivals, what we wear is a visual reminder of our ethnic roots. Embroidery and weaving are synonymous with cultural identity. Linens, tapestry, and clothing are the threads that connect us to our past, our families, and the community. They are the fibers that have created a global network linking descendants with their homeland.
In 1927, when the legendary Ukrainian dance choreographer Vasyl Avramenko toured his company across the Canadian prairies he left a visual legacy that would circle the globe and extend far into the future. The spectacular sight of heavily embroidered blouses and woven fabrics introduced audiences to the richness of heritage textiles and inspired new generations to take pride in their roots.
This exhibit is a reflection on how clothing and costumes have woven our lives together. Particular attention is given to the major role of fashion and performance costuming in maintaining ties to cultural identity and keeping the culture alive. The intention is to share the many stories related to the interwoven fates shared with the clothing we wear, and to stimulate an ongoing dialogue among those who cherish needlework, weaving, and couture.
Будь то традиційний одяг 1800-х років чи костюми та футболки, що носяться на щорічних фестивалях, те, що ми одягаємо, є візуальним нагадуванням про наші етнічні корені. Вишивка та ткацтво є синонімами культурної самобутності. Постільна білизна, гобелен та одяг – це нитки, які пов’язують нас із минулим, родинами та громадою. Вони є волокнами, які створили глобальну мережу, що зв’язує нащадків з їх батьківщиною.
У 1927 році, коли легендарний український танцювальний хореограф Василь Авраменко гастролював зі своїм колективом по канадських преріях, він залишив візуальну спадщину, яка кружляла по всьому світу і сягала далеко в майбутнє. Вражаючий вигляд рясно розшитих блузок та ткацтва познайомив глядачів із багатою спадщиною текстилю та надихнув нові покоління пишатися своїм корінням.
Ця виставка є роздумом про те, як одяг та костюми сплітали наше життя разом. Особлива увага приділяється головній ролі моди та костюмів для виступів у підтримці зв’язків із культурною ідентичністю та підтримці культури вцілому. Намір полягає в тому, щоб поділитися багатьма історіями, пов’язаними з переплетеними долями та одягом, який ми носимо, а також стимулювати постійний діалог між тими, хто любить рукоділля, ткацтво та моду.
