Paradise

Isaiah 58:11 – “And the Lord shall guide you continually and satisfy you in drought…And you shall be like a watered garden…”

Monks of the Middle Ages planted flowers and herbs in special walled-in gardens. One such monastic garden near the Lady Chapel of Winchester Cathedral, dating from the 9th century, was known as “Paradise.” Here, among the flowers, monks could retire to meditate; among the fragrant flowers, they could draw near to God and adore Him in the works of His creation. The flowers most often chosen for these gardens were madonna lilies, irises, roses, poppies, peonies and violets.
