By the Fence
“By the Fence” depicts Baba’s “Volunteer Poppies”.
They were the wild ones that seeded themselves – usually on the other side of the fence.
These large poppies were a variety brought from Ukraine by early pioneers. The seeds were a staple in the pioneer diet – especially used for making “makivnyk” poppy seed rolls.
“By the Fence” is part of Larisa’s ‘Baba’s Garden” collection which was originally exhibited at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village – Summer 2002.
