“Pioneer Suite” is a series of 3 images inspired by Choreography created for the Viter Ukrainian Dancers. The images were first unveiled in June 2009 as animated backdrops for the dance “Pioneer Suite” which interpreted scenes from the first wave of Ukrainian emigration to Canada at the turn of the 20th Century.
Kalyna or Cranberry and its symbolism has been interwoven into Ukrainian literature, poetry and music. The red berries have a passionate connection to love and romance, and the tree itself has come to symbolize companionship, loyalty and true love.
The first image “Kalyna” features a “Kalynovyi miist” or bridge of Kalyna representing a transitional bridge symbolic of the move made from Ukraine to a new, freer life in Canada
The second image “Kanada” features the vast Canadian prairie that greeted setters and offered its resources to make a new homeland.
The third image “Our Passion” – the sheepskin coat and the violin are symbolic of the music and dance that brought comfort to the pioneers as they faced the many challenges of settling in a new land.
